Lake District, UK
The Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon from 4 to 5 July 2026 is an annual 2-day mountain navigation race with a variety of courses in the Lake District.
The event comprises 6 linear courses of varying lengths and technical difficult and one ‘score’ course where competitors (in teams of 2) choose which controls to visit over a 2 day total of 12 hours.
Teams are given a map on day one and choose which controls to navigate to over a 2 day total of 12 hours, staying the night mid-way at a campsite. Competitors carry all their gear, including the safety equipment listed in the rules.
All competitors need to be competent in the use of map and compass in the mountains. Many checkpoints require accurate navigation, which is important in misty conditions.
