The Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon from 10 to 11 July 2027 is a 2-day mountain navigation race in the Lake District.

The event comprises 6 linear courses of varying lengths and technical difficulty, plus one ‘score’ course where competitors (teams of 2) choose which controls to visit over a 2 day total of 12 hours.

Teams are given a map on day one and choose which controls to navigate to over a 2 day total of 12 hours, staying the night mid-way at a campsite. Competitors carry all their gear, including the safety equipment listed in the rules.

All competitors need to be competent in the use of map and compass in the mountains. Many checkpoints require accurate navigation, which is important in misty conditions.

Distances/Events

Approx. distances over 2 days with elevation:
Wansfell: 27K / 2200m (suitable for first-timers)
Bedafell: 28K / 2150m (suitable for first-timers; Adult + junior 4-17 yrs)
Harter Fell: 31K / 2550m (suitable for first-timers)
Carrock Fell: 39K / 2900m (experienced)
Kirkfell: 41K / 3700m (advanced)
Scafell (Elite Course): 54K / 4500m (expert)

Fairfield (Score course): 12 Hour (experienced)

Location map

Location is TBC. The location of the overnight camp-site is only disclosed on the Saturday morning of the event.
